Roberta Jamieson invited to outline the work of the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation at an international Expo in China

July 5, 2010 – TORONTO --- Roberta Jamieson, President and CEO of the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, was invited to make the keynote address at a Canada-China Forum on City Migration and Ethnic Identity held July 5 in the Canadian Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010.

“I’m delighted for this opportunity to share the Foundation’s success in celebrating achievements with its televised annual award gala event and our program of providing scholarships and bursaries to First Nations, Inuit and Métis students with Chinese officials and academics involved in policy-making in China,” Ms. Jamieson said.

The Forum was organized by the Association for Canadian Studies, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences’ Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, and the Canadian Studies Center of Fudan University, who are funding the Forum.

Ms. Jamieson said the fact that roughly half of the aboriginal population in Canada is living in its largest cities is one which is being experienced in China. She said she expects to discuss the results of the recent Environics survey of urban aboriginal people which revealed that despite the move to the city environment, a desire to maintain culture and close ties with their home communities is very strong. As well, higher education was the aspiration most frequently mentioned as being the way to a better future.

Sixteen other Canadian speakers will participate in the Forum.
